The Misinterpretation of Music and Lyrics

Everyone interprets music differently. And just because one receives a certain message out of certain lyrics, doesn't necessarily mean that what that person interpreted from the lyrics is exactly what the artist was saying.

Recently I posted a post about sexism in the Robin Thicke "Blurred Lines" music video.

I shared it on my Tumblr and Facebook accounts, and was surprised by some of the reactions.
It got good reception on Facebook. No negativity whatsoever.
Not sure if all of the people who hit the "like" button necessarily LIKED my blog post (they could have just liked the pictures,) however, contrary to what I said in a previous post about assuming, we're going to assume that they liked the post itself.

The people on Tumblr on the other hand? Did not like the post too much. I got about 3 or 4 unfollows after posting the link, adn some feedback from people obviously angered by the song and video, and now, my post.

First and foremost, an artist can write a song, and the listeners can all have a different interpretation of the words. Some totally different than the artist themselves.

Does that necessarily make the listeners wrong?

It can. But in many ways, NO.

As an artist myself, I believe it's the listener's choice to hear what they want from it. Unless of course the lyrics are straight up blatant with their message to the point where we cannot assume that they're saying anything OTHER than what we're hearing.

However, some of the feedback about my post contained examples of lyrics which the person responding found unacceptable.

  • Exhibit A: "Yeah there's that. Personally I feel it's redundant to use [naked women] in order to sell a product. Plus that line about domesticating a girl smacks of men saying 'a women's place is in the kitchen.' There's no need for that in the 21st century,"
To be completely honest, I am NOT sure what that person was trying to tell me, but I gathered that they were not agreeing with me, right? (I could be wrong.)
My personal interpretation of the domesticating line in Blurred Lines is nothing negative at all. If anything it's POSITIVE. Some man is trying to "domesticate" this woman, and either she doesn't want to be (as she shouldn't HAVE to be) or Robin doesn't want her to be (so he can sleep with her, big deal) or BOTH. But I didn't gather that Robin was the one who wanted to "domesticate" her.
Also, women themselves use such imagery to sell products. It's the oldest saying in the business industry: SEX SELLS.
The video honestly looked like an American Apparel ad, really.
  • Exhibit B: "Except for the repeated 'I know you want it' followed by 'Here, breathe this 'Jamaican wind' it always works for me' implying that he's gonna have to drug her up to get her to do it, but he 'knows she wants it.' "
This, mes amis, is a prime example of what I'm getting at with this post.
  1.  I know PLENTY of men who have told a girl "I know you want it." When a guy is ready and trying to get a girl in bed (especially if he knows she's not a prude if you gather my meaning.) And a man trying to get in a girl's pants is the oldest game in humanity!!
  2.  "Jamaican wind." Hmmmmm, does anyone else think of marijuana when they hear that? What exactly is he going to do with weed? Make her trip out on his body parts?
"Jamaican wind" typically isn't a date rape drug, nor is it a drug where you lose ALL control to the point where you have sex with someone you didn't want to.
If it is for you, no offense, but you have a problem and should stop smoking immediately.
So, you see, my interpretations of the song are totally different than just these two individuals. There are billions of people in this world.
Am I wrong? Who knows?
Are they? Who knows?
But people shouldn't immediately jump to conclusions (or in this case, interpretations.)
And let's just be honest, are we REALLY surprised at what we hear in music nowadays? After the rap genre, Prince, Vanity 6, Peaches, GG Allen, etc. why do people continue to  act shocked about this stuff?
I mean, there are artists rapping about eating baby's for crying out loud.
And has anyone stopped and asked, "Hey, what if this is what Robin Thicke wanted all along? Now his song and video are getting WAY more promotions."
Hmmmmm.
And lucky for me, I was able to find yet another blog post that agrees that Robin is not being a rapist.

Artist of the Month: Pokey LaFarge

This month's featured artist (who is actually the first "Artist of the Month" on this blog ever) is Pokey LaFarge.

pokeylafarge.net

LaFarge is a music mastermind with a retro style and sound.

He mixes jazz, ragtime, country, folk, blues, and even western swing. There is no single genre to really describe him as (sort of like Serge Gainsbourg.)

Since 2007, LaFarge has provided us with excellent Frank Sinatra meets Ernest Tubb sounding tracks. Sometimes releasing albums under the name Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three.

pokeylafarge.net

He just recently released a self titled album under Pokey LaFarge in June of this year. The album delivers to his fans.

And the lyrics and rhyming are the best part. Sometimes simplistic rhymes, and sometimes with modern topics despite his retro style.

pokeylafarge.net

LaFarge has also recently collaborated with rockabilly/soul artist, JD McPherson (one of my favorite modern artists) for the Oklahoma tornadoes relief. Which you can purchase on his website, pokeylafarge.netProceeds are donations to the relief.

If you haven't given LaFarge a listen, you will not be disappointed. Catch his latest self titled album!!

LaFarge is currently signed to Jack White's label.

Lil' Kim vs. Nicki Minaj (and her YouTube minions)

Many of you, I'm sure, have heard about the drama between Kimberly Jones and Onika Maraj.

http://starjoos.wordpress.com

Better known as their stage names, Lil' Kim and Nicki Minaj, the two ladies are known to the world for their contributions to the music industry.

One is a rapper. The other is a sort of rap/pop singer.

Recently, I've been coming across people on YouTube ridiculing Lil' Kim. The videos I happen to be watching have to do with Nicki Minaj, however some of the comments were annoying.

http://chicchronicles.wordpress.com

As a guest star on Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live on Bravo, Kim was asked who she thought was the most overrated artist at the time. She did not give a direct answer, but she told everyone that they know who it is.

Now, we can all imagine whom she is speaking of. However, let's not forget the old saying: don't assume, because you make an ass out of U and me.

Of course the clip was posted on YouTube, and Nicki Minaj fans went (and still are going) crazy!!

U.S. teeny boppers and foreign teens alike were all commenting about how Kim is old, washed up, mad, jealous, bitter, hating, and broke.

Some went on to say that Kim could never be on Nicki's level, how Nicki is the queen of rap, and how she stole Kim's crown.

Many were ridiculing Kim for her plastic surgery, and some even claim to have never heard of her until after Nicki came out. Many even believe Kim is participating in this rivalry just to stay relevant.

rapradar.com

Especially since she released her Black Friday mixtape. In which she mocks Minaj's debut album, Pink Friday. The single from the mixtape, also titled Black Friday, was accompanied with a video and uploaded onto Worldstar Hip Hop and then onto YouTube (where I caught it.) Of course the comments on this video were ALL the same on that video as well. Nicki fans coming to her rescue.

http://thatgrapejuice.net/

Many of them quoting Minaj herself. Calling Kim a "stupid hoe," saying that she's a "tragedy," and quoting, "first name Ann, last name Raggedy." Both Stupid Hoe and Tragedy are diss tracks to Kim and the Raggedy Ann quote is from the Tragedy track.

This is the problem: Kim is not old, washed up, jealous, bitter, nor hating on Nicki.

She could be a little upset with some of Nicki's actions, but she has every reason to be, if we're being completely honest (I'll get to that in a moment.)

First off, the majority of people saying these things about Kim are under the age of 18. Most of Nicki Minaj's fans in general are. And the majority of these people are NOT doing their homework before they speak on the issue.

If anyone is jealous, it's Icki Garbaj. If you do your homework, you will discover that Ms. Minaj has been taking jabs at Kimberly Jones since 2003!!

Yes, 2003!!

Nicki has been on the come up since then. It is very obvious in Nicki's earlier music that she (like many female rappers known and unknown today) looked up to Lil' Kim.

http://www.thisis50.com/

She even took a photo exactly like Kim did for her Hard Core album back in 1996. Nicki has even said in an interview that she was paying homage to Kim in the photo, and that she was using it as "a platform" for her career.

Nothing wrong with that. Everyone has someone they look up to. Kim herself looked up to Biggie, The Notorious B.I.G. whom she had a relationship with, and who was her mentor before his death in 1997.

However, the problem is, Nicki was throwing shade at Kimberly at the same time as she was copping her style.

http://thatgrapejuice.net

In many of Nicki's lyrics spanning from 2003 to 2010, she has taken jabs at Kim and other female rappers in the game. She herself has called them old, washed up, saying that they're "always fronting for nothing," that she "heard they're not" hot.

Tumblr.com

She's even taken a personal jab at conceited rapper, Remy Ma, stating, "tell that bitch with the crown to run it like Chris Brown."

Now, these are supposed to be people she looks up to, and they've all played a roll in getting Nicki where she is today. Particularly Kim, who paved the way for MANY female rappers, and ,love it or hate it, started an entire female rap trend: sexually explicit and graphic, detailed lyrics.

Nicki shouldn't EVER disrespect ANY of these women. Without them, she'd still be Onika from the block in Southside Jamaica, Queens.

But many people are unaware of Onika Maraj's jabs towards Kim and other females in the game. Many don't even know she's been around that long.

Luckily, #TeamLilKim released a 7 part YouTube documentary titled, Playtime Is Over, which highlights the entire issue. The doc showcases Nicki's many contradictions, her fronts, her earlier work with the jabs thrown at Kim and others, her admitting to being a mistress and keeping that mouth of hers busy (and NOT on the microphone,) and how she blatantly stole rhymes, ideas, and looks from Kim. As well as her swagger jacking from singers, Lady Gaga and Gwen Stefani.

Many of the comments left by viewers on the Playtime Is Over videos are former Nicki fans baffled, upset, and confused at how Ms. Garbaj has played all of her fans.

We all know rappers like to use allusions in their rhymes, and also sample other rappers' lyrics, but there is a limit. Nicki steals Kim's rhymes AND themes.

Some examples of Nicki's thievery:

  • Kim: Black Barbie dressed in Bvlgari, I'm tryna leave in somebody's Ferrari
  • Nicki: I'm the Barbie, you might have seen me on MTV in the Ferrari
  •
  • Kim: I get mines from auction, million dollar dress, belonged to the princess
  • Nicki: Just booked a flight to where the princess auction is, tell them other girls they'll be taking some "losseses"
  •
  • Kim: Don't take it personal, baby, fuck you, pay me.
  • Nicki: Fuck me? Blame me? Fuck you, pay me, this is what you made me
  •
  • Kim: You want a freaky girl? Welcome to Kimmy world
  • Nicki: You want a freaky girl? Welcome to Nicki world
  •
  • Kim: I'm a freak, I don't care, just don't get none in my hair
  • Nicki: I'm a freak, I love the beat, just don't get none in my sheets
  •
  • Kim: Mr. Biggs, you know you gotta keep me jiggs
  • Nicki: Mr. Bigg, you know you gosta keep me jigg

Also, in 2007, Nicki completely takes the beat, title, melody and tune to Kim's The Jump Off from her album, La Bella Mafia, released in 2003, and called it, The Jump Off 2007.

In the song She says, "Rockin' the corset, sip drinks in my minks."

In the video for the song, she is seen wearing a tank top and jeans.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGMszqpAf9o

Funny, cause in Kim's The Jump Off music video, she is seen wearing a corset in one scene,

http://music.mtvasia.com/

and a mink coat in another....

http://thecine6.com

Nicki's nails were obnoxiously long in the video. Did she mean THOSE minx??

Nicki wasn't even real enough, in my eyes, to take responsibility for her actions when this feud caught public attention. When the misinformed public began siding with Nicki, claiming that Kim's attacks and her Black Friday mixtape came from nowhere. Garbaj also seemed to play innocent as if she had no idea where the animosity was coming from.

And at the same time, she looks like a modern day Kim with her crazy colored wigs, her wild fashion. Hell, I even heard that she hired Kim's old stylist!!
Now for those who claim to have never heard of Kim before Nicki and this feud are either VERY young (probably too young for YouTube,) living in a third world country, or just flat out lying. Rap and country fans alike, blacks and whites, old and young, near and far ALL know who Lil' Kim is. She's a LEGEND!!

As far as Nicki taking her crown and being the queen of Hip Hop and "reopening doors" for females, those are very sad claims. Lil Kim' is RAPPER. A Hip Hop artist. She did collabs with pop stars and rock stars (Pink, Christina Aguilara, Tommy Lee, Britney Spears) but she rapped in EVERY song. 98 to 100% of her music is Hip Hop.

Nicki, on the other hand, is a POP star. About 60% of her (non mixtape) work is hip hop. The rest pop. I'm sorry, but your cannot compare The Jump Off to Starships.

Sorry!!

So, how can Nicki take the crown or be a queen of Hip Hop, when she isn't even a Hip Hop artist? She belongs in the Pop Hop category along with Aaron Carter and Will Smith.

The plastic surgery? Kim has been known for her plastic surgeries since 2000, and probably even earlier than that. What's new? Most importantly, what does her plastic surgery have to do with her music? Cause the music sounds great to me, even WITH the surgeries.

http://live.drjays.com

Not to mention, Nicki has plastic surgery!! Doesn't the story go that she was going to be a porn star, so she plumped her ass up in order to make it in that industry? I heard that from a Nicki fan defending her on one of the videos mentioned earlier. Regardless of what she did it for, she still did it. And her fake ass is what helped her gain attention in the music industry.

Flarebanter reported that she spent $10,000 minimum on the implants alone. With additional cosmetics cots, recuperation costs, and handouts to aides to keep their mouths shut.

Then, the little Barbz, as Nicki fans like to call themselves, have the nerve to bring up relevancy, and how relevant and popular Nicki is, and how everyone is buying her albums and not Kim's. How Nicki has been on American Idol, how her perfume is out, how she writes all her own lyrics, how she's won BET Awards in a row, how the New York Times and MTV supposedly called her the most influential female rapper of all time, and how she hasn't even been in the game that long.

If we're going to bring up achievements, let's do it right:

Lil' Kim is one of, if not, THEE most relevant female rapper!!

http://www.coveralia.com

3 out of 4 of her albums went platinum. Her second album, The Notorious K.I.M. went platinum in just 4 months!! Her debut album, Hard Core, actually went double platinum, is critically acclaimed, and said to be the best female rap album of all time by some.

http://entertainment.ca.msn.com/

Her 4th album, The Naked Truth, did not reach platinum, however, it's critically acclaimed, and earned her 5 mics from The Source magazine. A hip hop magazine (not The New York Times or MTV.) Something NO OTHER female has EVER done.

People also trash her for her releasing that Black Friday mixtape on Paypal. According to Kim, she broke a Paypal record. And it's a mixtape, not a studio album. Kim is an independent artist now too. Record labels aren't paying for publicity and whatnot.

http://kiddunot.com

And if everyone is supposedly buying Nicki's albums, how come Roman Shitloaded had such poor sales? Even WITH its re-release, she just now made platinum, and that album came out over a year ago.

Minaj even publicly blamed Wal-Mart and Target for her poor album sales. First off, if sales were bad before the re-releasing, why is she surprised about the results? Both Wally World and Target claim that they refused to stock the album on their shelves because re-releases never do well in sales. And they were obviously right, and smart business people.

Another thing these Barbz (or Barfs) like to mention is the fact that Nicki has all these Billboard chart hits. The most out of any female.

Cool, but she couldn't even reach #1 on the charts to save her life. I heard she finally has a #1 hit, but I don't know how true that is. But at lease Kim has a #1!!

BET Awards really aren't much of an accomplishment, to be honest. I mean, stand up if you have a Grammy (not you, Nicki. Sit down.)

Kimmy has a Grammy.

Then the Barfs like to mention that Lady Marmalade, the song that got Kim her Grammy and #1 is a collaboration, not her own work, a cover song, and that it isn't even rap.

http://yasfx.buzznet.com

Okay. But with all the collabs Nicki does and the many solo pop songs she does, she can't even get nominated for a Grammy? Let alone WIN one?

http://losangeles.about.com/

It's a cover, yes. But Kim's verse in the song is ORIGINAL. It can also be considered a pop track, however, what did Kim do in the song? She RAPPED!!

The Barfs go on to add how Nicki was at the Superbowl. I could have sworn that was Madonna's performance, but I kinda changed the channel when during that whole disaster. Madonna probably just used Nicki to stay hip. She saw a young, popular "artist" and asked her to be in her performance.

http://rapfix.mtv.com/

It's not as if Nicki was asked to sing the National Anthem or something.

And wasn't M.I.A. in that same performance? No offense to fellow M.I.A. fans (as I am one myself,) but she isn't even a big name and SHE was at the Superbowl. So that argument is sort of dull. If M.I.A. can perform, anyone can.

I wouldn't be surprised if they got Susan Boyle next!!

Then there's The New York Times and MTV references: The New York Times stamps "Best Seller" on every book that is released, honestly. WHAT DO THEY KNOW ABOUT HIP HOP?

Same goes for MTV. What do they even know about music in general? It should be RTV. R for reality since all they show are reality shows now.

Many people say that Kim should be the bigger person since she's older, and just not say anything. Why should she be? If anything, she HAS been the bigger person for quite some time now. She gets shots thrown her way since 2003, and now that she finally retaliates in 2011, she's in the wrong? And both Kim and Nicki are in their 30s.

Finally,  I want someone to actually prove that Kim doesn't write her own lyrics. So many people claim that, but I've yet to see proof.

Some man, Michael Antonio, actually took Kim to court, claiming to be an unpaid ghostwriter for her. Yet, I didn't see Kim's name on his supposed contract with her.

http://www.soulculture.co.uk

Charli Baltimore, who was dating Biggie at the time of his death, also claims that Kim didn't write her own lyrics. However, Faith Evans, Biggie's wife, who is NOT a friend of Kim's in the least, says Kim actually does write her own. Lil' Cease also claims that Kim, in fact, writes her own lyrics.

http://crossphazer.wordpress.com/

In the demo to Kim's song, Big Momma Thang, on her 1996 Hardcore album, Kim disses both Faith Evans and Tupac. Now, why would Biggie write a diss track  to his own wife for Kim? Especially since Kim is claiming that he's her "property" within the lyrics. If that were the case, why would he start dating Charli after his separation to Faith, if he was Kim's property?

And why would a man diss another man through a female's song? He was NOT afraid to fire back himself.

So there you have it!!

If you'd like to learn more, you can watch Team Lil' Kim presents, Playtime Is Over on YouTube.

Nicki came out stealing her whole persona, all while busting shots at her.

Nicki copped her style, her stylist, and even her rhymes, merged it with Lady Gaga with a hint of Gwen Stefani, and called it original.

Although known for holding grudges (both Faith Evans and fellow rapper, Foxy Brown, whom Kim had a long term beef with tried to make amends but Kim refuses) I heard that Kim doesn't even mention any of this nonsense anymore, but Nicki fans are still pressed.

http://www.rap-up.com/category/artists/lil-kim/page/2/

She may have a lot of plastic surgery, and people may talk about she looks Asian now too, but she AND her plastic surgery looked very good in she and Tiffany Foxx's "Jay-Z" video. And Kim got into the industry WITHOUT her surgery giving her a boost, unlike others.

And surgery really does not reflect her music at the end of the day. Face may be fake, but she keeps it real.

Kim does not need to make pop songs to sale records. And at the end of the day record sales don't mean anything. Real music fans know that.

I listen to bands and artists that would never DREAM of reaching platinum, yet they're still making albums and playing music.

Sometimes, it's the rappers on the mixtapes putting out the best stuff. To them, it truly is about the music, so their music is coming from the heart and soul.

Oh, and Kim had an entire college course about her life at Syracuse University, titled, Hip Hop Eshu: Queen Bitch 101 - The Life and Times of Lil' Kim.

Kim wins!!!!

Not Saying She Deserved It, But....

I am very late, but I'd like to weigh in on the Chad Ochocinco/Evelyn Lozada dispute.

http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/evelyn-lozada-files-for-divorce-from-chad-ochocinco-johnson-2012148

Now, I don't really know the full story of the whole situation, but I do know that Evelyn was feeling like Rihanna when Chad went OCHO LOCO on her!!

http://blog.vh1.com/2010-07-09/ochocinco-the-ultimate-catch-meet-the-cast/

We all know that Chad Ochocinco is was the NFL player who had that whack reality dating elimination show.

http://www.vh1.com/shows/basketball_wives/season_2/series.jhtml

Ms. Evelyn we also know from reality television as the woman who acts a fool and makes a mockery of women on VH1's Basketball Wives.

The two tied the knot somehow last year, and before we even knew where they spent the honey moon, Chad HEADBUTTED the crap out of her!!

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/chad-johnson-ex-wife-evelyn-lozada-injury-photos-emerge-article-1.1375619

I can't say I've actually sat down and watched a full episode of Basketball Wives, but I can say that I've seen my share of EVscapades.

http://insidethefame.net/archives/category/evelyn-lozada-fight-with-jennifer-williams

Evelyn acts a DAMN FOOL on national television. She is loud, arrogant, violent, argumentative, and boughetto.

http://newsone.com/2005265/5-things-that-basketball-wives-and-jerry-springer-have-in-common/

She is a bully, and physically attacks other cast members with her hands and with champagne glasses. A classless piece of work. I guess Chad has never seen the show before for him to even marry her in the first place.

http://www.juicymagonline.com/celeb/2012/04/stop-the-madness-fans-boycott-against-evelyn-lozada-getting-her-own-show/#.Ufq-2G1UFnQ

I am honestly not shocked that Evelyn was beat up. She has been a bully and a rowdy drama queen, and it was only a matter of time before someone was going to smack her, like Jennifer was smacked on the show.

I am, however, surprised that it was dumbass Ocho Cinco who did the damage.

It must have been really intense during that altercation for him to jump like that. Chad seemed like a chill, laid back kind of dude.

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/mugshots/celebrity/sports/chad-johnson

I don't know if it was worth it to get cut from his team, and have to spend some time in jail. Now, he's asking for a second chance. I guess he thinks he can just pull a Chris Brown, and everyone will just blow it over.

http://mediamrs.com/main/2012/02/fight-jennifer-williams-gets-slapped-by-evelyn-lozadas-assistant-its-caught-on-video/

Chad is stupid, but this is ,in a way, karma for Evelyn and her bad behavior.

She acted so tough and so wild and bully-like when the cameras were rolling. Guess there weren't any champagne glasses within her reach when he headbutted her.

It's sad though. Evelyn could have been on Football Wives with this marriage.

http://www.hollywood.com/recaps/7723547/football-wives-premiere-recap?page=all

Too bad.

I hope they both learned lessons from this.

Robin Thicke: Sexist? (Warning: Explicit Content)

The other day, in the wee hours of the morning, I was trolling the trolls on YouTube when I came across the new Robin Thicke music video for his song, "Blurred Lines."

I was rather surprised, because I had heard it on the old school radio station whilst changing the song on my iPod in my car.

I like the song. The beat is excellent, the vocals are great.

But I was surprised to see a majority of negative feedback when I scrolled down to read some of the comments left by other viewers.

Many people believe that the song and video are over the top sexist. Both men and feminists alike.

http://toobaditsgood.com/tag/t-i/

I wasn't necessarily listening to the lyrics when I heard it, but I rather liked the music video. It just looked like a very modern video with three artists, and three models having fun. It seemed tasteful.

I decided to actually take a look at the lyrics to see for myself. Some of the lyrics read:

"Tried to domesticate you
But you're an animal
Just let me liberate you"
"That man is not your maker
And that's why I'm gon' take a
Good girl
I know you want"

I don't know about you, but these lyrics honestly didn't seem so bad to me.
One blog said that the song is about him trying to talk an unwilling girl out of her panties. I kind of got that the girl was already naughty, and her boyfriend was trying to get her to settle down, but Robin knows what's up. However, I've misunderstood lyrics in the past, so I could be TOTALLY off.

However, aren't MANY women unwilling at first???
But then, I thought, perhaps she's this married or not single woman whom Robin is trying to coerce. Either way, I didn't fully understand what the big fuss was over.

THEN I saw the unrated version of the music video.
http://thetrendingreport.com/robin-thickes-blurred-lines-no-1-on-uk-charts/
Okay, now I can see where a lot of this is coming from. The girls are seen nude throughout various scenes in the video (all while having a great time.)

http://www.pedroandradetv.com/en/blurred-lines-by-robin-thicke/

http://www.pedroandradetv.com/en/blurred-lines-by-robin-thicke/

It is a little much (for certain people,) and I can see how people can view it as sexist.

But then I think of other music videos like Rob Zombie, and Chingy's uncensored Right Thurr music video in 2003 that would come on BET at 3am.

http://tomcatmuzik.blogspot.com/2008/07/chingy-right-thurr-uncensored-dvd-rip.html

http://www.wat.tv/video/chingy-right-thurr-uncensored-1scz1_2i7f9_.html
http://allfbvideos.com/show/chingy-flip-boozie-balla-baby-remix/&page=10
I'm not trying to brush off any sexism, but I just don't see why he's taking so much heat for it. This is NOT new for music videos, and this is nothing new in life period.

I mean, look at all the films that do this, especially HORROR flicks.

As far as the lyrics to the song go, I am not surprised at what I hear in songs anymore. 2 Live Crew, Too Short, Lil' Kim, Prince, Trina, and many more have EXTREMELY detailed lyrics, and today many more artists are doing the same.

Now, as far as the video goes, I can sort of see why people would be angry.. IF this were something new. However, it's not.
Robin, T.I. and Pharrell are all married men. It's not like this is a documentary of their lives or something....or is it?
http://hiphopissue.com/2013/03/28/robin-thicke-friends-blurred-lines/robin-thicke-new2/
I even read that one of the models:

http://www.pedroandradetv.com/en/blurred-lines-by-robin-thicke/

Didn't mind shooting the video at all.

http://64eiffel19.wordpress.com/2013/03/28/11513/robin-thicke-blurred-lines-ft-t-i-pharrell-explicit-version-%E2%80%8F-4/

And we need to remember, a lot of music videos are typically the director's idea and art.
